Out-Smarting the Fox

Taken from 'Burkes Backyard' 2001
'A fox can cause havoc in the farmyard, but there are some good ways to out-smart this wily predator,' says Megg Miller.
'The children's favourite rabbit, tiny lambs, nesting poultry - all are nutritional delicacies to the fox. His taste is unquestionable: only the very best will do. Rarely will he do you a favour by dispatching the aged or infirm.'
'The fox now enjoys the suburban life. 'Bushy cover along railway lines, banks of creeks and the foreshore, together with urban parkland - even golf courses - have provided suitable accommodation in our city areas. There's rubbish to scavenge and no shortage of poorly-built poultry sheds to provide easy take-away chicken nutrition. The fox is not only highly adaptable but cunning and capable of causing unimaginable carnage.
Stories abound as to what will or won't keep foxes away. Here are the most common ones:
A dog's presence keeps foxes away - only if it is not chained up. Sometimes foxes work in pairs; one will lead the dog away and the other fox seizes the prey.
Use a light - Old timers used a kerosene lantern in the paddock, and nowadays we have flashing lights or activity-triggered security lights. The key to success is to move the light frequently or it loses its power to deter.
Employ companion species - Goat bucks, pigs, donkeys and alpaca wethers have all been cited as effective. Donkeys shriek and chase the fox, the goat buck is capable of standing up to it, pigs have a strong smell believed to mask that of poultry if kept close by, and alpaca will keep foxes out of sheep flocks.
Anyway these are worth a try, but always keep lambing ewes under supervision and the henhouse locked up.'

Early research on glyconutrients (the necessary sugars) suggests that by adding glyconutrients to the human diet there is an increase in production in one's bone marrow stem cell production.
